Registration for this year’s Summer Taiko Intensive is now open!

Offering 6 exciting courses to choose from, featuring special guest instructors Kyosuke Suzuki from the Wakayama Shachu of Tokyo, Halla Huhm Foundation’s Mary-Jo Freshly (Korean chango” sling drum), Sean Shibata (Fukuoka), and Kenny Endo!

The 6 courses offered this summer are:

Kagura Mai (shrine dance moves) – Kyosuke Suzuki
Shimedaiko Edobayashi Techniques – Kyosuke Suzuki
Yokobue (Japanese transverse bamboo flute) – Kyosuke Suzuki
Beta Chuudaiko – Kenny Endo

In 2017, the North American Taiko Conference will travel to the Southern California coast! We are pleased to announce that NATC 2017 will be held on campus at UC San Diego from August 10-13, 2017. We look forward to a weekend of workshops, concerts, and lectures at one of the top universities in California.

Taiko, Slack Key Guitar, and Shakuhachi. Island Breeze is a trio of world class musicians, each masters of their own instruments, who have come together to create some new and inspiring music. Island Breeze, features taiko artist Kenny Endo, Grammy award winning Jeff Peterson (Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar) and shakuhachi master Riley Lee. The group was nominated for Na Hoku Hanohano awards (Hawaii’s version of the Grammys) for Album of the Year and Na Pali for Instrumental Song of the Year in 2015. Don’t miss their once a year concert, this time in the 102 year old Shingon Shu Hawaii temple, up the street from Ala Moana Center. Box Office opens at 6pm. Doors open at 6:30pm.

5-day taiko intensive in Honolulu, HI. Guest instructors include: KYOSUKE SUZUKI (Tokyo!!!), Mary Jo Freshley, Sean Shibata, and Kenny Endo. Workshops in Korean changgo (predecessor to the sling drum/katsugi), Kagura shrine dance movement basics, yokobue (transverse Japanese bamboo flute), shimedaiko (Edo Bayashi techniques), betadaiko (upright chudaiko), and Japanese festival music! Plus Kyosuke Suzuki performs for the general public. Enjoy good weather & great taiko!

“Island Breeze” is a trio of world class musicians, each masters of their own instruments, who have come together to create some new and beautiful music. Grammy-nominated slack key guitarist Jeff Peterson and shakuhachi master Riley Lee have been working together for many years. They joined forces with taiko master Kenny Endo in 2012 during a week-long artists residency in Honolulu. The three recorded a CD which was released in 2014. The unique blend of slack key guitar, taiko drums and Japanese flute is an inspired sound not to be missed.
