Summer Taiko Intensives

This summer, Kenny Endo and the Taiko Center of the Pacific offer intensive courses in Taiko drumming IN ADDITION to two five-week long summer classes.  The Taiko intensives are for those who want a concentrated study in Taiko.  Enrollment is limited.

All classes are held at Kapiolani Community College Annex Building (a.k.a. “The Chapel” located in the parking lot on the Diamond Head side of campus), 4303 Diamond Head Road, Honolulu, Hawaii.

Solid Shime-daiko Playing (Kenny Endo)

Jun 14-18 (M-F)
12:30 pm – 2:15 pm

Good shime-daiko technique will improve your technique on all sized taiko.  This class will concentrate on the intricate shime-daiko techniques and patterns found in the lively festival music of Edo Bayashi (Tokyo festival music).  Emphasis will be on timing, playing with precision, grip, sound, nori (groove), and relaxing. Odaiko -The BIG Drum. The GREAT Drum (Kenny Endo)

Jun 14-18 (M-F)
2:30 pm – 4:15 pm

Learn the basics (stance, grip, hitting technique, training tips, soloing, maximizing sounds, and relaxing) for playing the “great drum.” Traditional Kabuki patterns on the odaiko will also be introduced.  A practice odaiko piece will be taught focusing fundamentals, simple improvisation, base beat patterns, and becoming more comfortable and dynamic at performing the odaiko.
